Condura Skyway Marathon

A blogger's night was held last Wednesday in connection with the most anticipated race of 2011, the Condura Skyway Marathon. I, personally have always been looking forward to this race, who wouldn't want to run on the Skyways? For two years now, Condura race had always been on top of my running list. I find it nice that while I'm running I'm making a sea creature smile, main beneficiaries for every run is the marine life. For next year, all participants would be running for the dolphins.

Race fees are as follows:

21K        -    P1,150.00
16K        -    P1,050.00
10K        -    P950.00
5K        -      P750.00
3K        -      P550.00

Try the country’s first electronic registration system for data accuracy and convenience.

  • thru cash at the Condura Skyway Marathon Registration Center at Greenbelt 3, in front of Asics Store, upon payment you will have your racekit with D-Tag technology, dri-fit shirt, discount coupon for Asics and Hershey's chocolate. or by;

A message from Fred Uytengsu

Regarding the Ironman 70.3 Philippines on August 2011

Hello fellow triathletes— This message below is from Fred Uytengsu, organizer of Ironman 70.3 Philippines 2011. Please feel free to pass on and share with the other tri teams:

"It has been brought to my attention about certain concerns and grumblings about the cost of Ironman 70.3 Philippines and the quick sell out of rooms at Camsur.  I am not on Facebook but some friends alerted me about the situation.

Allow me to clarify some misconceptions.  First of all, bringing Ironman to the Philippines has been a long time goal of mine and it took several years of negotiations.  It also takes a quarter of a million dollars!  We work with sponsors to defray as much of the costs as possible and registration fees are in line with other 70.3 events around the world.  Some ask "why do we have to pay more in the Philippines than other local triathlons"?  The simple answer is because it is a better event and it is an official Ironman race! Why do you pay more for a Rolex versus a Swatch? They both tell time.  We are cognizant of the financial burden on triathletes and also try to keep costs down for transport and food.  (Most races don't even arrange these details). Hopefully you will agree that the service and quality are better than most other events.  WTC thinks so.  Furthermore competing locally defray the cost of airfare.

With respect to hotels, there is a shortage in CWC simply because so many people want to stay there.  So as soon as registration opened, CWC rooms were filled up in 72 hours.  There are some rooms reserved for sponsors but these are less than 20.  At the Awards Banquet this year, Gov. Lray promised to build an additional 100 rooms.  He is working on this but we are not in a position to offer these until they are confirmed.  So for those who were not able to get in to CWC, I would suggest that you book another hotel and once the CWC rooms open up, it will be posted on the event website. I can tell you that in Kona, ALL hotels jack up their rates and require a minimum of a one week stay.

Registrations are far ahead of where they were last year.  I expect we will sell out well ahead of schedule.  We are seeing great interest from abroad because of the word of mouth support from those who attended last year.  One group from Hawaii is bringing 15 triathletes and is also doing a charitable mission.  So aside from promoting sports tourism, they are giving back to a community they have never visited before.  This is something we can be proud of and encourage others to do.  Additionally the sport is growing and we will have a lot of first timers in 2011.

WTC Managing Director, Murphy Reinshreiber told me that Ironman 70.3 Philippines is one of the better races around and was the best inaugural race he had ever attended.  Sure there are many areas for improvement but we are off to a good start.  We are not tooting our own horn but simply trying to reinforce that we can hold world-class events in the Philippines.  By doing so we not only grow the sport but help with sports tourism.  This is a free country and with Facebook and the internet we have seen a growing democratization of free speech.

I would have hoped to hear how many Filipino triathletes are proud of our very own 70.3.  Instead,  it is disappointing to see some of these complaints  are typical of the crab mentality which negatively impacts our country.  It is quite easy to try to drag someone down when they are trying to do well.  I'd hope that more people would focus on trying to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.  It is even more disappointing to read words like "boycott" coming from Filipino triathletes.  You do have a choice and hopefully it is an informed choice.  I trust the aforementioned has clarified any misconceptions and if you see fit, we'd like to see you at the finish line."

Merry Christmas.

Fred Uytengsu

Note: The blogger is in no way connected to Mr. Fred Uytengsu, I shared this post just to spread the word and since I also know some people who will be joining this event. :)

Quezon City International Marathon 2

It was my most painful race yet, but sweet at the same time. I had to be content with the thought that I have to wake up early for a race that I didn't train enough for. I have been busy lately with website project from my previous employer, and is almost close with a new project from the same client. The thought of DNFing crossed my mind, but having one DNFed in my race history (I think) is enough. So, I had to sucked it up, I have to set aside my pride, and has to face the truth that I might not be able to finish the race with a new PR.

Erick woke me up 45minutes past 3AM, and both of us were on the rush, thinking that we have to face traffic going to Quezon City Hall, but praise God because there was none. The parking lot was full of cars that we immediately went to the starting line after getting our things. I wanted to watch the gun start of the 42K runners, since our good friend and teamate Marga Baula is there. But because we woke up late, the 42K runners were already gone, we just made our way to the pack of excited 21K runners. I even saw my childhood (super)crush Jeffrey Hidalgo, I have a notebook way back in highschool with his pictures, new clippings and everything that has his face. :D

I actually don't know if we started on time since I  don't have a watch with me. I think there were more than a thousand of  runners and as soon as the gun was fired signaling the start of the race I was fighting my way to reach the timing chip mat. After one kilometer I was able to get my groove, I get to run consistently without stopping, but not for long.

My right leg started cramping as early as kilometer 7, I opted to walk and stretch a bit so that the pain would go away. Yet as soon as I started running again, it was a cramp attack from my left leg, so walked I did. I think it was a kilometer 8 when I saw and met (personally) Carrey Reyno which I 'am thankful for. I get to have a running and walking buddy which made the whole race easier.  I was not really aiming for any PR so I just cherished the thought that I get to run once again in Commonwealth Avenue formerly known as Don Mariano Marcos Avenue which was once knew as one of the deadliest road in the Philippines.

What do you do when hunger strikes you while on a race? I begged a marshall to share his Piatos with me, I asked for a free sample of nachos with Nestle Carbonara cream as a dipping inside UP campus which by the way taste very good. And so I thank you all, the Lord will repay you for your goodness. :)

These food along with my GU power gel, Viva mineral water and Powerade from the water station fueled me in this race. And kudos to the organizer, I was well hydrated, almost all station had cold Viva mineral water and Powerade for me and all the runners. And most of all, thank you Lord for once again protecting me and giving me the strength physically and mentally to finish this race, all glory is Yours alone!

I finish my most painful race (yet) and it was memorable! :D

Would do my best in my next race and I 'am psyched for it, training starts next week. :D

Returning to my old home

Since my blog (therunningmom.net) had been hacked, I've been on hiatus in blogging.

But don't get me wrong, it's just taking a long time to transfer my site to a new server. So for now, while my site is still under construction, let me share my stories here. :)

Corregidor: Settle the Score

A race out of the usual route is a big factor when a runner is picking his/her races. A few days from now would be the Camarines Sur Marathon which I think would be a hit, I know lots of people who would go there just to run. A runner sometimes time his vacation for an out-of-town or even an out of the country vacation like the Standard Chartered Marathon.

Last December, I took the opportunity of joining the Conquer Corregidor Race, haven't gone to the place yet so I was excited signing up for the race. It was a total of 10 miles, combination of uphill and downhill, road and trail. It was totally a different experience for me, it was a tough course and took me almost 3 hours to finish.

So, when Ms. Vima Mendoza aka Kulit Runner through Ms. Vanessa Ordinario, Project Coordinator for this test run invited me for a test run at Corregidor, I immediately accepted, and she was accommodating enough to let Erick tag along. The run was supposed to be on morning of September 11, but due to the long weekend Sun Cruises was fully booked so we had to take a later time of departure which mean running under the heat of the sun.

My body was still sore from the long ride our team had the day before. But I really wanted to run in Corregidor along withe other bloggers. Upon arriving the island, we had our buffet lunch. And a quick briefing headed by Mr. Edward Kho was held before our test run.

It was a day of fun and training, a lot of may already know that there will be a run in Corregidor at the end of the year and it will be a half marathon, just a tip for those who want to join start saving for this race and start TRAINING! Do you want to conquer Corregidor or just let Corregidor conquer you. And if you will be joining the race, please respect the island, don't litter!

First Long Ride

After last night's Xterra Philippines Press Launch, I had to wake up early this morning for the Team Endure long bike ride in Jala Jala, Rizal? Was I excited? Yes and nervous at the same time, this would be my very first long ride, I would be biking for 30 minutes up to an hour, either at UP ACAD Oval or just home using bike trainer. As early as 4AM, I was already awake, had to wake up Erick since he just arrived home past 1AM giving him only 3 hours of sleep.

Meeting place is at Shell Marcos Hway, almost all our teamates have arrived and was waiting for us and 4 more team members. We had to convoy to the designated parking area at DPWH Morong, one by one the parking area was occupied by the team, checked tires, did a little warm, offered prayer to God asking Him to guide each and every one of us, and we're off to our ride.

Team Endure with friends

We would biking a total of 70 kilometers to and fro, good thing my super hubby Erick was with me all the time, I would get nervous when we were approaching a check point area and cross roads, this is my first ride along side with vehicles, large trucks would sometimes overtake me, with its smoke filling my nose. Some areas have bike lane which I took advantage of. It think it was past the 10K mark when I started to get dizzy, experiencing a terrible headache, had to tell Erick for us to stop for a while for I had to throw up, and loosen my helmet, after that I was totally feeling okay except for some stop for hydration and nutrition.

Upon reaching 35K, the team was nowhere to be found, and we had no way of communicating with them, so Erick decided to go and look for them, I had to wait for him/them for a few minutes and I was able to rest.

Solo picture while waiting for the gang

And the team was whole again, we ride back to the parking area taking stop to take picture, buy drinks and eat lunch.

Lunch never tasted so delicious ever since as we stopped for lunch, the team chatted over lunch. There was still 12 kilometers to go before the parking area, I was tempted to hitch at Rico's car, since I already felt comfortable, full and relaxed. But I had to fight over this thought, and also thinking that Erick might get angry. With all my might (by God's grace) I biked the last 12 kilometers, there was already lots of vehicle at this time and the sun was at its hottest. Every kilometer we biked made me glad, I was eager to get to the finish line (parking area) it helped me motivated to biked. But it was also at this time that both my hands felt nothing, it felt numb which made it hard to adjust the bike gear. But praise God that I made it whole, praise God for the strength He gave me and for the rest of the team, praise God for having friends/teamates who's willing to lend a hand and support each other, praise God for my dearest hubby who biked beside me all the time knowing that my pace was slow for him, praise God for keeping me safe from the little mishap I had during a turn at a sharp curve, praise God for everything! Now, I had to rest my tired legs and ready myself for a test run tomorrow at Corregidor. :D

Putik Pare! Xterra Philippines

All MTB and trail running enthusiast, get ready for this, PUTIK PARE!

More details to follow. ;)

My journey begins...

I have been running for more than two years now, started with a 5K run/walk at the Mizuno Rush to Infinity, trained for my first 10K at the Adidas King of the Road, did my first half at the Eco Dash. A lot of people would ask me why I 'am running, I simply answer for my health. But at times they would compliment me by telling me that I'm looking good loosing pounds. Frankly, I did, before I use to maintain 110-115 lbs. which is still in normal zone for my height. But ever since I have started multi sport and been cross training with swimming and biking, my normal weight have dropped to 102-105 lbs. I was never a fan of food deprivation  I still eat my favorite Cheetos, sometimes drinks Coke when I want to and still has my desert. :)

*******************

I have started my journey to every runners goal, and that is to finish a full marathon. I'm now currently training for my first full marathon race this coming November. With the help of Runners World Smart Coach, I 'am diligently following my training plan and hopes that it pays off. When I joined my first 10K, I was afraid of the distance thinking that 10K is too long but the idea dismissed when I finished the race, and the same goes for my first 21K, and is now in the same state of mind. I'll keep you posted on my journey as I begin to reach for my dream. :)

Enduring the Half Ironman Race

AUGUST 22 - D DAY

This is it! D-day is almost here, Erick woke up at 1AM, he couldn't sleep because of the excitement so he decided to watch a movie on the computer, but it's loud noise woke me up. So Erick and I were awake and waited while watching a movie. I decided to ready the stuffs that we would be bringing, a bag for Erick's post race and a bag for me and for the kids. I dressed up, dressed the kids while they were sleeping and called the cafe to follow-up on our breakfast.

Erick was a bit anxious, I felt like I was walking on thin ice, I'm careful of what to say for I don't want to ruin his mood. It was past 4AM when we left the hotel to drive for CWC, it was already filled with participants, cheerer and supporters when we arrived.  One by one the transition area was filled with participants having their body markings, you could feel the excitement from everywhere.

With Jonas of Sunkist

A few minutes later, Erick was on his way to the big lake, you could hear applause and cheer from supporters. At this time, I was feeling nervous, I was praying to God to keep everyone safe, that no mishap would happen, and one by one I telephoned Erick's mom, my mother, my sister and my best friend informing them that in while Erick would start on reaching for his dream and to help me for praying Erick's safety.

Waiting for the start of their wave

The sound of the horn indicates the start of the Professional and Elite athletes start. Everyone was clapping and shouting, we could see how fast these guys are and have trained so hard for this race. Erick's wave would start 2 minutes after the pro and elite started, their wave was the biggest, and most of them are competitive. At the sound of the second horn, the louder the cheer, my hands won't stop shaking while I was taking a video.

Wave 2 (Photo from Doc Marvin)

After taking a video, I immediately went to on to the small lake to wait for Erick's transition from Lago del Rey to the small lake. One by one, pro and elite athletes came running to swim for another 300m.

NZ's Terenzo Bozzone who won 1st last year :D

Noy Jopson who won 1st last year

Finally! Erick made it out of the big lake

Erick finished his 1.9K swim in 41minutes and 0.2 seconds which is fast, at this point I was worried thinking that he might have pushed himself so hard at the swim that his run might suffer.  I was even more excited when I saw him off to the transition area.

Running to T1

I had no way of watching Erick in the bike leg except from his exit to the highway, so we just patiently waited for him at the run course. And that is the reason why I don't have a picture of him on the bike leg. It was a hot day, and it was almost everyone's comment on the weather that day, the last year result is faster than that day.

He finished the 90K bike route in 2hours and 35minutes and was on his way to T2. WHAT?!!! he has a fast bike time, so what happens now to his run? would he be walking and crawling his way to the finish line? this are my thoughts when I was calculating his time, I just hope that he had done his proper nutrition so that his run wouldn't suffer. Then he was off to his first loop at the 21K run.

But why would I be worried if he looks like this? All smile pa rin. :)

Or maybe because he saw my "hakot cheerer"  NOTE: pumayag po sila na walang bayad basta pakainin ko lang daw po sila. :)

We have agreed that his estimate time of finish would be 5hours 50minutes or up to 6hours. But with his performance I predicted that he could finish in 5hours 30minutes considering that he won't walk at the run leg. But once a runner always a runner.

Nearing his way to the finish line (Photo courtesy of Doc Marvin)

My calculations were wrong, he could do a sub 5hours 30minutes. He clocked his finish time at 5hours 25minutes, which is a decent time for a first time half Ironman participant. He did it! He reached for his dream and made me proud. All glory and praises belong to the Lord alone! His love ENDURES forever and His mercy never ends.

Almost there

Victory is yours!

Here is his time according to Ironmanlive

Congratulations to the member of Team Endure who are also an Ironman James, Rico, Ziggy, Ronald, Melvin, Jason. Hats off to all of you! You rocked CamSur! And to the unequaled supporter/cheerer Taty, Marga, Ellen, Carina, Doc Marvin, RJ and Emil, I salute you. Money can't buy your efforts, for giving the time just to be there for the team. God bless you all even more and God bless Team Endure!
